Art and the Economy

I can’t tell you how many artists I have talked to lately who are in total mental chaos due to the failing economic status of the world. Artists from northern Europe to southern California are upset and concerned about falling sales to no sales. These people are trying to make a living, but art is usually one of the the first things to go in a family budget who is feeling the squeeze. So what is an artist to do? In truth we are all makers of a luxury item. Maybe now is not the time for our most high priced work, but then many artists make unique items, not found in your local mall. Christmas shopping may actually be better for artists who create a lower priced custom made creation, just for the buyer. How Unique! How different, the comments come. Hopefully buyers and consumers will become more choosy about what to buy for thier mother, their best friend. This just may become our time… artist unite, put on a brave but hopeful front, and Buy Handmade , Buy Local, and support your fellow artists.
